Mrs. Gates, 86, Beaver Valley, died Sunday, October 11, 2009, at her residence. She was born on February 14, 1923 in Beaver Valley a daughter of the late Edwin R. and Gladys R. (Green) Gates. she was twice married first on November 12, 1941 to Charles M. Downs who died September 8, 1970. She then married Paul R. Miller on June 18, 1973 in Winchester, VA. Paul survives along with ten children Charles Downs of Coalport, Clair Downs, John Downs, Nancy Lidwell and Bob Downs, all of Fallentimber, Ellen Iberson of W. Decatur, Richard Downs of N. Cambria, Dave Downs and Earl Downs, both of Glasgow and Ken Downs of Martinsburg, four stepchildren Janet Dreese of Coalport, Sharon Yarger and Paul Miller, Jr., both of Cleveland, OH. and Jack Burns of Tampa, FL., 26 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddauughter. Also surviving are three siblings Blanche Kitchen and Lorraine Potutschnig, both of Irvona and Irene Allen of Hamburg. She was also preceded in death by a son Gary Downs, two granddaughters Heather Bouch and Susan Feathers, a stepson Dwane Miller, four brothers Neil, Mearle, Boyd and Earl and two sisters Virginia Whited and Olive Helsel.
Sylvia enjoyed flea markets, auctions, arts & crafts, crossword puzzles, old-fashioned hymn sings and loved watching Joel Olsteen and The Gaithers. She was a long time patron at the Harmony Grange Fair.
Friends will be received 2-4 & 7-9 pm Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at the McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow where funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 am with Pastor John Bennett officiating. Burial in Beaver Valley Cemetery.
