Mildred S. (Ricketts) Smiley

     Mrs. Smiley, 103, a resident of AutumnCare of Shallotte, North Carolina, and formerly of Roseland, died Monday, March 14, 2011 at the home.  She was born July 19, 1907 in Spangler a daughter of the late Samuel W. and Bertha H. (Delaney) Ricketts and on October 22, 1927, in Frugality, married Leslie W. Smiley who died August 20, 1989.  Surviving are three children: Samuel L. of Manning, SC., Camille B. Campbell of Kagawong, Ontario, Canada and Sandra A. Reghetti of Carolina Shores, NC., 6 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Sara, a grandson Barry Campbell, a granddaughter Barbara Purvis, 4 brothers Robert, John, Samuel and William and 2 sisters Dorothy Fowler and Kathryn Westrick.
She was a 1926 graduate of Reade Twp. High School and had attended the Normal School at Indiana University of PA State Teachers’ College, Juniata College, Huntingdon and Penn State University, State College.  She retired in 1972 from White Twp. Elementary School where she had taught for 25 years.  She had also taught in Glendale and Reade Twp. elementary schools.  She was a member of Sodality, PA Association of School Retirees and a past Regent of the James Alexander Chapter of the DAR-Madera.  She was a member of the former St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, now St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Frugality.
Friends will be received 6-8 pm Friday at the McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow, where a vigil service will be held  in the evening and funeral services Saturday at 10:00 am with Fr. Sean Code officiating.  Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.
