Lt. Colonel Gerhard Mittermaier Obituary

     Lt. Colonel Mittermaier, 75, Sinking Valley, died Monday, July 13, 2020 at his residence.   He was born August 10, 1944, in Reichenhall, Germany, a son of the late Magdalena Mittermaier and immigrated to the United States,  became a US citizen at the age of 16 and attended Monmouth Regional High School, where he met his future wife, Gretchen A. Willgerodt.  He attended Monmouth University during which time he enlisted into the United States Army.  Gary graduated from Monmouth with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and married Gretchen on August 24, 1968 in Eatontown, NJ.  During his enlistment Gary gained a Masters degree in Business from Fairleigh-Dickinson University.  He went on to achieve the military rank of Lt. Colonel, serving during the Vietnam and the Persian Gulf Wars.  For a period of time he served as a Civil Servant at Ft. Monmouth but during 9/11 he commanded the garrison at Ft. Monmouth, retiring in 2004, at which time he and his family moved from New Jersey to Sinking Valley, purchased a farm and established the Peaceful Acres Horse Farm, which he and Gretchen operated until his death.

     Gary is survived by his wife, daughter Corinna L. (Andrew) Wilson of Huntingdon and their children Thomas, Audrey, Drew and Trevor; daughter Megan A. (Richard) Ahlert of Tyrone and their children Leighton, Cyrus, Anleigh and Stellan, and a brother William Walsh, Jr. in Florida.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters Kathleen Dahlheim and Avia Greene.

     Gary was a volunteer hospital chaplin at UPMC-Altoona.  He attended New Life Worship Center, Altoona, where friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, July 17, 2020 from 2:00 pm until the 3:00 pm memorial services with Pastor Wayne Schaffer officiating.  Military honors will be conducted by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard at the church.  Arrangements by McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow.
