Mr. Mayes, 80, of Coalport, died Sunday, December 11, 2022, at UMPC Altoona. He was born May 13, 1942, in Van Ormer, a son of the late Robert A. and Anna Mary (Noonan) Mayes. On July 2, 1966, in Hollentown, he married A. Lorraine Hollen who survives along with four sisters: Judy L. Hollen of Palmyra, Trixie A. Chasse of Seminary, MS., Wanda J. Weakland of Hollentown and Noreen M. Flanagan of Altoona and several loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lynett Mottern and a brother Bernard.
Joe served as a Technician 4th Class in the United States Army. He retired from Tanoma Coal Mines, Dixonville, as a Deep Mine Bolter. He had also been employed as a welder for Bowen & McLaughlin Co. in York. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed sharing his carpentry and construction skills with his friends and family.
He was a member of the Hollentown Assembly of God where 7:00 pm funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2022 with Pastor Joe Hollen officiating. Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Wednesday from 2-4 pm at the McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow and again on Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the church. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.
