Mrs. Mayes, 88, Van Ormer, died Wednesday April 18, 2007 at her residence. She was born February 7, 1919, in Frugality, a daughter of the late Bernard and Sarah (Smith) Noonan. On December 24, 1935, in Glasgow she married Robert A. Mayes who died March 24,1974. She was also preceded in death by a son Bernard, a son-in-law Kenneth Chasse, 2 sisters: Loretta Louise and Florence Brady and 4 brothers: Tom, Paul, Joe and Frank. She was mother to 6 surviving children: Judy L. (Jerry) Hollen of Palmyra, Joe A. (Lorraine Hollen) of Gill Hollow, Trixie A. Chasse of Glendale, AZ., Wanda J. (Paul) Weakland of Hollentown, Noreen M. (Francis) Flanagan and Lynett S. (Dave) Mottern both of Altoona. She was also a loving grandmother to 11 grandchildren, 17 greatgrandchildren and 2 greatgreatgrandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Helen Baer of Merritt Island, FL. And numerous nieces and nephews.
She retired in 1981 after 20 years as an inspector from Puritan Sportswear and prior to that she was employed at Price’s Poultry and SKY Brothers, all in Altoona. Above all else, she loved God and her family, enjoyed attending church, studying the Bible, quilting and doing crossword puzzles.
She was a member of the Hollentown Assembly of God where her funeral services will be held Monday April 23 at 11:00 am with Pastor Dean Hinton officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow. Friends received at the McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow Saturday 7-9 pm and Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 pm and at the church Monday 10:00 till the hour of services.
